just to close the loop here, I wanted to thank everyone for the info. After
thinking about it a bit, I probably am going to install the OS cleanly.
Hopefully getting the wireless & VPN (pptp) stuff to work again will be
easier the 2nd time around! I put /home on its own disk partition, so that
will stay, but '/' will go bye-bye.
