There may be a "more slick" way of doing this, but...

Most apps will allow you to print to a file, which will give you a 
postscript file;  provide a name, like test.ps.

Then, in a terminal, you can do:

ps2pdf test.ps

The ps2pdf program will convert the postscript file to pdf and save it 
as 'test.pdf'.
