I am currently unable to replicate the problems I was having. If these
problems come back I will make more detailed observations and report them
here.
Is there any chance

There is a chance that I installed crossover and after that ubuntu issued
and update to my graphics driver (currently the i810 for an Intel
82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device). These things do get updated from
time to time although they are normally only minor version changes.
Could you clarify what happened with the trial version - is
> it that Office failed to install, or that it was crashing on
> you all the time?
The installer initiated, however, usually the first O2K installation screen
asking for name, company name, product key, etc. pops up within a few
seconds of starting the installer. In this case, when I tried to install it
took several minutes for that screen to pop up. When I went ahead and
installed it anyway I can't honestly remember if it completed the install
and then kept crashing on me all the time or whether the installation
failed. At that point I gave up and reinstalled the OS and the problem went
away.
Also, what happens if you do a 'reset crossover'

Even rebooting made no difference. I didn't try kill -9 on the various wine
related processes.
My apologies for being vague. Once (or if) the problem comes back I will
report back with much more detail.
Thanks for your help.
