[cw-discuss] lockup in FC6 AMD64

I thought that I would provide a follow-up for what I have found so far.

First, I received helpful responses pointing at OS issues, BIOS, and 
problems related to nVidia card BIOS, etc...

I now have some ideas on how to solve some of these issues. Based on the 
thought that it might be related to the BIOS on the video card (as it 
relates to the BIOS on my MB, the video driver, and the Kernel), I 
decided to also try a new video card (can you say upgrade?)

I pulled my EVGA 6600GT and dropped in a 7600GT.


I then attempted to install software a windows application and it locked 
up as before.

disappointing!

I used System | Preferences | Desktop Effects and I turned off the 
pretty GNome desktop effects and the lockup went away.

I will file an nVidia bug report, but I might now have a handle on how 
to avoid this problem.

The answers I received on this list pointed me to other locations that 
caused me to pursue this further and I think that I will have a more 
stable system, even if it is at the expense of the pretty window 
dressings (so sad, it looked so pretty).
