[cw-discuss] When will CrossOver be XP based

Hi Mark,
Well, actually, CrossOver has the ability to create
Windows XP bottles right now; however, it is a common
misconception that that would somehow be better.
Let me try to explain.
CrossOver is essentially Wine. And Wine is an alternate
implementation of Windows.
Some applications (not all, but some), ask Windows to
report what version of Windows they are on. If we tell them
the truth ("Wine"), they tend to freak out.
So, instead, we have the configurable ability to return
any of Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows 98 (or Vista,
or whatever we need to).
Based on that response, the programs will usually make
decisions about what to do next.
And, it turns out, telling them 'Windows 2000' *usually*
makes them behave in a simpler fashion that has a better
chance of working than if we tell them 'Windows XP'.
So the point of confusion is that most people naturally
think that since CrossOver can have Windows XP bottles,
it's 'better' to use Windows XP, when the exact opposite
is actually true!
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Jeremy
