Is it only a rumor or can it be documented that some Windows programs start
by checking if Wine is present, in which case they stop or do other
unpleasant actions?

If true and documented such things should be made widely known.  Users should
know which software is sabotaging Wine.  If Microsoft could be shown to
contribute to Wine sabotaging, this would constitute yet another example
of monopolistic practices.

If true this would also explain why Wine seem unable to reach version 1.0.
