I use http://www.emusic.com.  It's a subscription service.  Doesn't have 
all of the most popular artists, but has a wide selection of lesser 
known but good to excellent tracks.  Then, I downloaded and installed 
from emusicj their desktop client which downloads from emusic and 
installs tracks/albums in a folder.  Amarok then reads this 
automatically into its databases.  Amarok won't sync (as yet) with iPod, 
but you can easily transfer tracks and playlists to the iPod.

Works for me.
