Hi,
This is only a suggestion, but sometimes, gnome services hang and
prevent the application from working (I'm thinking
gnome-settings-daemon). Log off and look with ps aux for any program
which are still running (slay can be your friend here). As for XFCE,
unfortunately, the edgy version is far more stable than the dapper one.
I experienced this problem frequently with dapper (panels disappearing).
Maybe backporting packages would be adequate for you.
