I guess you mean that it crashes the whole X server, bringing you back 
to the login prompt? That should not happen and is usually the sign of a 
buggy graphics driver. So I would recommend trying to update your 
graphics driver and/or switching from the proprietary NVidia/ATI one to 
the open-source one.
