Hi Marc,
I did get win4lin installed on ubuntu Edgy. I was able to just run
the installer and have it work, but when I tried to run the actual
application I would get the same error. I fixed this by going into the
Synaptic Package Manager under your Administration menu located in the
System Menu on your top bar if you are running gnome. Then locate and
install libgtk1.2 and it should also mark libgtk1.2-common to install
along with it. This is ok, as these files are needed by libgtk1.2.
Once you have this installed you should be able to execute the win4lin
bianary again and it should load right up for you. I did use win4lin
for a while to test it with Windows XP Pro, and I was left very
disapointed actually. The performance of win4lin was kind of slow on my
system and the lack of support for dual monitors kinda killed it for me.
I am currently using VMware 6 beta. It has better speeds and also
supports dual monitor and a host of other awesome features like; the
ability to send the process to the background and then bring it back up
again when you want to use windows again. What really drew me to it was
the dual monitor support. I am a web developer, and I still needed a
solution to run Photoshop CS 2 and a load of other windows aps and also
to use dual monitor. This way windows actually reconizes both of my
monitors in the OS while using VMware. VMware is priced comparable to
win4lin, but I think VMware is a much better product. As of right now,
VMware 5 for linux is going for 189.00, which is $100 more expensive
then win4lin, but their suport and product warrants it I think.
Currently, win4lin's website says there is a discount for win4lin until
October 31st 2006, but that is a little outta date. VMware's current
version is 5.5, and I was using that until I installed the beta about 3
days ago. You can read up on it at: http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/
or checkout their beta 6 at: http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/ws/
the install was a breeze and even getting Windows to run was amazing.
My setup for my windows virtual machine is; RAM: 1024mb, Processor: 1
(you can use 2 if you have them, or are using a core 2duo), Hard Disk
space allocated: 12GB. Another good thing about VMware is VMware tools.
which install into windows, to help bridge the gap so that you can move
your mouse right out of windows into linux without having to release it.
Also, it has good shared drive support, so that I can specify a folder
or a number a folders to use in windows as shared folders. Then I can
mount them as drives in windows. I have the my documents folder in
windows mounted to the same folder I use in linux to store all my files
and stuff. So no matter what system i am in, I can share resources. I
also, use an SVN for work to keep my team organized with our sites we
maintain. By placing that in the share folder, I can access and even
use a windows SVN client to update the repository as well as using a
linux SVN client to update and maintain the repository. It really helps
with people who are forced by their job to have access to a windows
environment.
Let me know if you need anymore help getting win4lin running or setting
up VMware if you decide to try that. Win4lin is a good product, it
really all boils down to your needs for windows at the end of the day.
Hope all this jabbering helps,
