local machine

I have recently downloaded and installed the demo version of crossover
office. I have been able to configure it and install Lotus Notes and the
MS Office 2003 Suite. I am able to use Lotus Notes and MS office
applications fine. Very minimal configuration requilred - all went well,
and I was pleased with the product.
I do have a couple of questions / issues, however, and if anyone is able
to help me out with them, I'd greatly appreciate it. The product is very
promising in performing as avertised, and I'd like to be able to continue
using it.
Some background: I have installed crossover office onto a machine running
fedora core 4. This is a remote machine, located in a server room; that
is, it is a server that I am accessing from another machine in my office.
This machine (the local one, without the installation of crossover office)
is running debian sid, using ssh for access, and using Window Maker as a
window manager.
This first question / issue surfaced when I opened a msword or powerpoint
document by double clicking on the document using konqueror on the host
machine. Until that time, I'd been using the command line to start the
applications, and nothing on my local machine was affected, which is what
I expected (and wanted). When I opened the msoffice file by double
clicking on it in konqueror, I noticed that the Window Maker menus,
background, icons, and desktop in general *on my local machine* had been
altered. This truly surprised me. I was not looking for or desiring that
behavior, and was even surprised that it was possible. I would like to be
able to keep my local machine unaffected by the crossover installation,
and retain the desktop appearance and menus that I had setup previously
for Window Maker. If that means that I need to start the applications
from a command line, that is not a problem.
What is it about the integration with konqueror *on the remote machine*
that caused the desktop *on my local machine* to be altered? It may be
that I need to restrict permissions on my local machine to not allow an
application to alter the menus. If that is the solution, it would allow
me to run crossover office in the manner that I like, and not affect your
product at all. I do want to restore behavior, so I'll have a chance to
learn a little about Window Maker in the process. If you have any
suggestions on restoring, I'd appreciate hearing them.
As I said, the produce looks very promising, and any help with these issues
would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
