I think I figured out the problem here.

I have these Micron boxes (450 Mhz Pentium II units).
They have onboard nvidia early generation chips which most Xorg
detection tools identify as providing hardware acceleration for 3D
effects and probably even 2D acceleration.  Anyway, there were two
courses of action I could take...

1.  Switching the xserver to "vesa" for the plain VGA support.
2.  Replacing the hardware with another machine.

I replaced the hardware.
I no longer see the two mice when moving out of a Wine application
window.  So the transition seems much smoother.

Hopefully somebody else will be able to benefit from this info in the
future.
