I think the problem is that asking what's special about Photoshop
compared to the GIMP is, sincerely meaning no disrespect, a daft
question. It's only asked by people who don't know much about Photoshop,
and who don't want to go much beyond adjusting levels on their photos.

There is an absolute world of difference between them. I've just
finished using Photoshop for 2 photos. Off the top of my head, here's
what I absolutely needed that I don't think is in GIMP:

 * soft proofing of the colours
 * Lab colour space
 * Gamut warning
 * Adjustment layers
 * Shadow/Highlight filter

There's loads more beyond the basics, like Smart Objects, Smart Filters,
Adobe Bridge, HDR tools, and so on. It's like asking me to list the
differences between a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Formula 1 car.

Maybe some of this stuff that I need is in there - I've not looked at
GIMP 2.4 - but until someone says it has Lab mode and Adjustment layers
it's an absolute non starter for me. Those are totally essential for any
sort of photo editing above hobby/personal website level.
