Gimp devs work hard now to change the old image. Development process is
very active now - they will implement GEGL - you discuss here about
features - seems to be from framework limitations not from dev. limitations.

Finally - I use at work Photoshop CS3 and GIMP - for most operations
Gimp is easier.

Exporting transparent TGA or PNG is a pleasure too. And I can tell you
all a lot about sectors where the GIMP is superior [masking tools for
example]( Photoshop CS3 need a lot of time to work with to become
proficient - I know Photoshop from his early ages but I'm still search
why they dont wanna make some more accesible handlers - they are moving
very slow to construct a workable UI - as Corel Photopaint do for ages )
...but native CMYK processing engine and integration of Pantone colors,
Spot colors... they were a big hole for the DTP segment.

At least GIMP in under heavy development - we will have at least a new
UI, CMYK, vectors, adjustment layers, live effects - maybe nest year - I
hope to have a PRO version where we can deal with Pantone.

Also for image processing and for raster effects - GEGL add a new horizon.
Until then - I am happy with my Gimp.
