Well, I'm going to break my own guidelines here.  When someone asks how 
to do something using a windows program rather than a native linux 
program, I expect they have a good reason why they don't want to or 
can't use a native one.

In this case, though, I will suggest OpenOffice.  Since you aren't 
changing anything in the document, see if OO will open it and retain 
the formating you need.  If it does, file > export as pdf.  Lots of 
options in the export dialog.

I don't have any complex *.doc files, but I did open one in OO, insert 
an image, and export as pdf.  Formating was retained, picture was 
there, and it was searchable.
