Our primary reason for keeping them separate is that we haven't tested
upgrade processing at all.  It is therefore likely that a 5.0.3
bottle upgraded with a 6.0 beta will be broken.  What's worse, it
is likely to be broken in a subtle, hard to catch, way.  Hence our paranoia.
