Do not know if T-Bird can do this, but KMail can be set so it knows this is 
a mailing list and a simple "Reply" goes to the list instead of author. 
(Plus my Reply-All and Reply-to-Author buttons still work as expected) 
Yes, I had to go to a tiny bit of trouble... 

Contrast this to some (non techie) lists I'm on that have so thoroughly 
broken things, that all *four* of my reply choices go to the list. Making 
it very inconvenient on those rare times a private reply is warranted.

I used to be on your side and have archived mail to prove it. But I'm now 
firmly in the camp of "Let me chose and don't break my d*mn buttons!" :-)
