As a workaround for the problems with Office 2003 I have tried
installing Office XP. This seems fine on the original machine (ie I can
start winword, type a few characters and exit).

Then I try copying it to other machines by rsyncing the entire parent
directory. At this point it's fine if I'm root but as an ordinary user
it either hangs on the startup splash screen or when I'm trying to exit
(it seems to depend upon whether I've just removed my .cxoffice
directory). I've tried chmod -r og+rX .

Either way, when I try to kill the cxoffice processes the first attempt
complains:
file_set_error: Interrupted system call

and I need to repeat the kill.
