Hi John,
The 2003 series of products are all radically different animals
than the 2002 and 2000 series.
We've had to completely implement OLE/COM as well as the Microsoft
Installer Service (several very large and very complex pieces
of technology) in order to get them to work.
With 5.0.3, things were working well enough for basic install
and operation. But the Equation Editor was not one of them
(and that is not for lack of trying - we care fairly deeply
about that use; we have a lot of scientists as customers :-/).
We've spent the past year working on that infrastructure
to improve it; that will be released in our upcoming version 6.
I am hoping that the Equation Editor will work properly for
Office 2003 in our version 6.
It's been a frustrating year - we've had to do a lot of
'behind the scenes' work to improve Wine. We've improved Wine
in a lot of subtle and fantastic ways (imagine implementing
all of COM and Internet Explorer in one year :-/), but it's taking
us time to bring it forward in a user visible and useful way.
But we're getting there. I can't promise any dates
(because I'm always wrong :-/), but we're now in late alpha
stages with 6, struggling to go beta. This one is taking
us a while, but I'm hopeful that we'll have a version 6 for you
not too long from now.
Cheers,
Jeremy
